JD Sports sells Canterbury brand

JD Sports acquired its initial interest in Canterbury in August 2009 through the purchase of the key trading assets and trade of Canterbury Europe from its administrators, along with the global rights to the famous Canterbury and Canterbury of New Zealand brands. However, it said that Canterbury products did not account for many sales in its stores with this trend unlikely to change in future.

?Having reviewed the options for Canterbury, we are pleased to have agreed its sale to Pentland on terms which are attractive for JD and provide Pentland with the opportunity to further build and develop the Canterbury brand,? said JD Sports? executive chairman Peter Cowgill.

Canterbury is the current kit partner of the international rugby union teams of South Africa and Scotland and of many leading clubs worldwide, including Leinster which recently won the Heineken Cup for a second consecutive year. Canterbury in March secured a four-year deal to become the official kit partner to the English Rugby Football Union, taking over from Nike.
