"We can't deny the fact that media has an influence when they're spending most of their time -- when they're not in school -- with the television," Martins said.

Harrison added, "Children who are not doing other things besides watching television cannot help but compare themselves to what they see on the screen."

Their paper has been published in Communication Research. Martins and Harrison surveyed a group of about 400 black and white preadolescent students in communities in the Midwest over a yearlong period. Rather than look at the impact of particular shows or genres, they focused on the correlation between the time in front of the TV and the impact on their self-esteem.

"Regardless of what show you're watching, if you're a white male, things in life are pretty good for you," Martins said of characters on TV. "You tend to be in positions of power, you have prestigious occupations, high education, glamorous houses, a beautiful wife, with very little portrayals of how hard you worked to get there.

"If you are a girl or a woman, what you see is that women on television are not given a variety of roles," she added. "The roles that they see are pretty simplistic; they're almost always one-dimensional and focused on the success they have because of how they look, not what they do or what they think or how they got there.

"This sexualization of women presumably leads to this negative impact on girls."

With regard to black boys, they are often criminalized in many programs, shown as hoodlums and buffoons, and without much variety in the kinds of roles they occupy.

"Young black boys are getting the opposite message: that there is not lots of good things that you can aspire to," Martins said. "If we think about those kinds of messages, that's what's responsible for the impact.

"If we think just about the sheer amount of time they're spending, and not the messages, these kids are spending so much time with the media that they're not given a chance to explore other things they're good at, that could boost their self-esteem."

Martins said their study counters claims by producers that programs have been progressive in their depictions of under-represented populations. An earlier study co-authored by her and Harrison suggests that video games "are the worst offenders when it comes to representation of ethnicity and gender."

Other research is starting to show the impacts of other kinds of entertainment sources, such as video games and hand-held devices. It indicates that young people are becoming creative at "media multitasking."

"Even though these new technologies are becoming more available, kids still spend more time with TV than anything else," Martins said.

Interestingly, the young people were asked about their consumption of print media, but the results were not statistically significant.

Martins conducted the research while she was completing her Ph.D. at the University of Illinois, as part of a larger longitudinal study done with her co-author, Harrison. They sought out certain school districts in Illinois because of their diversity, but African-Americans were the predominant minority group.

This imposes a technical problem on electromagnetics and antenna design: how to make the antenna not only small, conformal, but also multi-band, wide- band and versatile.In this thesis, a compact, low profile antenna used in handheld wireless communication terminal is proposed, which can receive communication signals from 3 bands including GSM, GPS and UMTS simultaneously.Based on the application background of the antenna, we designed several feasible system configurations: including a monopole antenna with meandered branch structure and another monopole antenna with long, straight and folded branch structure. They are in the size of 41mm?9.5mm?6.5mm, and both can cover the GSM, GPS and UMTS bands with their own advantages and disadvantages. According to the request of the design, the size of the antenna is reduced further and further. We make use of the different advantages of the two models above, and finally an antenna in the size of 40mm?6.5mm?3mm which can receive communication signals from 3 bands including GSM, GPS and UMTS at the same time is designed with some modification structures including adding a load, or adding a grounding line to change the antenna to a double PIFA structure. WASHINGTON (AP) ? The White House is aggressively pushing the idea that, contrary to widespread belief, President Barack Obama is tightfisted with taxpayer dollars. To back it up, the administration cites a media report that claims federal spending is rising at the slowest pace since the Eisenhower years.

"Federal spending since I took office has risen at the slowest pace of any president in almost 60 years," Obama said at a campaign rally Thursday in Des Moines, Iowa.

The problem with that rosy claim is that the Wall Street bailout is part of the calculation. The bailout ballooned the 2009 budget just before Obama took office, making Obama's 2010 results look smaller in comparison. And as almost $150 billion of the bailout was paid back during Obama's watch, the analysis counted them as government spending cuts.

It also assumes Obama had less of a role setting the budget for 2009 than he really did.

Obama rests his claim on an analysis by MarketWatch, a financial information and news service owned by Dow Jones & Co. The analysis simply looks at the year-to-year topline spending number for the government but doesn't account for distortions baked into the figures by the Wall Street bailout and government takeover of the mortgage lending giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

The MarketWatch study finds spending growth of only 1.4 percent over 2010-2013, or annual increases averaging 0.4 percent over that period. Those are stunningly low figures considering that Obama rammed through Congress an $831 billion stimulus measure in early 2009 and presided over significant increases in annual spending by domestic agencies at the same time the cost of benefit programs like Social Security, Medicare and the Medicaid were ticking steadily higher.

A fairer calculation would give Obama much of the responsibility for an almost 10 percent budget boost in 2009, then a 13 percent increase over 2010-2013, or average annual growth of spending of just more than 3 percent over that period.

So, how does the administration arrive at its claim?

First, there's the Troubled Assets Relief Program, the official name for the Wall Street bailout. First, companies got a net $151 billion from TARP in 2009, making 2010 spending look smaller. Then, because banks and Wall Street firms repaid a net $110 billion in TARP funds in 2010, Obama is claiming credit for cutting spending by that much.

The combination of TARP lending in one year and much of that money being paid back in the next makes Obama's spending record for 2010 look $261 billion thriftier than it really was. Only by that measure does Obama "cut" spending by 1.8 percent in 2010 as the analysis claims.

The federal takeover of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac also makes Obama's record on spending look better than it was. The government spent $96 billion on the Fannie-Freddie takeovers in 2009 but only $40 billion on them in 2010. By the administration's reckoning, the $56 billion difference was a spending cut by Obama.

Taken together, TARP and the takeover of Fannie and Freddie combine to give Obama an undeserved $317 billion swing in the 2010 figures and the resulting 1.8 percent cut from 2009. A fairer reading is an almost 8 percent increase.

Those two bailouts account for $72 billion more in cuts in 2011. Obama supported the bailouts.

There's also the question of how to treat the 2009 fiscal year, which actually began Oct. 1, 2008, almost four months before Obama took office. Typically, the remaining eight months get counted as part of the prior president's spending since the incoming president usually doesn't change it much until the following October. The MarketWatch analysis assigned 2009 to former President George W. Bush, though it gave Obama responsibility that year for a $140 million chunk of the 2009 stimulus bill.

But Obama's role in 2009 spending was much bigger than that. For starters, he signed nine spending bills funding every Cabinet agency except Defense, Veterans Affairs and Homeland Security. While the numbers don't jibe exactly, Obama bears the chief responsibility for an 11 percent, $59 billion increase in non-defense spending in 2009. Then there's a 9 percent, $109 billion increase in combined defense and non-defense appropriated outlays in 2010, a year for which Obama is wholly responsible.

As other critics have noted, including former Congressional Budget Office Director Douglas Holtz-Eakin, the MarketWatch analysis also incorporates CBO's annual baseline as its estimate for fiscal years 2012 and 2013. That gives Obama credit for three events unlikely to occur:

?$65 billion in 2013 from automatic, across-the-board spending cuts slated to take effect next January.

?Cuts in Medicare payments to physicians.

?The expiration of refundable tax cuts that are "scored" as spending in federal ledgers.

Lawmakers are unlikely to allow the automatic cuts to take full effect, but it's at best a guessing game as to what will really happen in 2013. A better measure is Obama's request for 2013.

"You can only make him look good by ignoring the early years and adopting the hope and not the reality of the years in his budget," said Holtz-Eakin, a GOP economist and president of the American Action Forum, a free market think tank.

So how does Obama measure up?

If one assumes that TARP and the takeover of Fannie and Freddie by the government as one-time budgetary anomalies and remove them from calculations ? an approach taken by Holtz-Eakin ? you get the following picture:

?A 9.7 percent increase in 2009, much of which is attributable to Obama.

?A 7.8 percent increase in 2010, followed by slower spending growth over 2011-13. Much of the slower growth reflects the influence of Republicans retaking control of the House and their budget and debt deal last summer with Obama. All told, government spending now appears to be growing at an annual rate of roughly 3 percent over the 2010-2013 period, rather than the 0.4 percent claimed by Obama and the MarketWatch analysis.

If you could add cells anywhere in your body, you might pick your brain. More brain cells should make you smarter, right? Well, a new study shows that they might just make you fatter. Because animals that make new nerve cells in a brain region that controls hunger tend to pack on the pounds. The results appear in the journal Nature Neuroscience. [Daniel A. Lee et al., "Tanycytes of the hypothalamic median eminence form a diet-responsive neurogenic niche"]

In the late 1990s scientists found that adult mammals can make new brain cells in an area associated with learning and memory. Since then, studies have shown that new neurons also arise in the hypothalamus, a structure associated with regulating body temperature, sleep and appetite. So, what are those cells up to?

Using techniques to track the birth of new neurons, researchers found that mice fed a high-fat diet make four times as many new cells in the hypothalamus than do animals raised on standard chow. When the scientists eliminated the source of these new cells, the chubby mice gained less weight.?

This mechanism might have evolved to encourage animals to store up body fat when food is plentiful. Which used to alternate with lean times. But in these boon times, your brain may be your waist enemy.

Ok, I should have been a little more specific. My ?pup? is a little over a year old. She?s 50% pitt, 25% shepherd and 25% lab. I call her a ?pup? cuz she acts like one. LOL. She?s a big girl, though. Anywho? I originally asked this question cuz my ?pup? eats her ?poo?. We also have another dog, 100% pitt. She is 11 yrs old. My other dog does not and never has (that I am aware of). In doing some research, MOST sites stated that she eats her ?poo? because she is lacking some important nutrients in her diet.

A parapneumonic effusion is a type of pleural effusion (excess fluid that accumulates between the two pleural layers, the fluid-filled space that surrounds the lungs) that arises as a result of a pneumonia, lung abscess, or bronchiectasis.
"Long-term treatment with inhaled corticosteroids is associated with an elevated risk of CAP in patients with COPD, while at the same time, use of inhaled corticosteroids is also associated with less CAP severity and a lower risk of pneumonia-related mortality," said Jacobo Sellares, MD, PhD, associate faculty member at Hospital Clnic The August Pi I Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS) in Barcelona, Spain. "In our study, prior treatment with inhaled corticosteroids in patients who developed CAP was associated with a lower incidence and less severity of parapneumonic effusion, regardless of the patient's baseline chronic respiratory condition."

The results will be presented at the ATS 2012 International Conference in San Francisco.

The single center study enrolled 3,602 consecutive patients with a diagnosis of CAP. Of these, 659 (18%) had respiratory disorders treated with inhaled corticosteroids before CAP was diagnosed. Respiratory disorders included COPD (56%), asthma (13%), bronchiectasis (6%), and other disorders (25%).

Patients with prior treatment with inhaled corticosteroids, compared with those without, had a significantly lower incidence of parapneumonic effusion (5% vs. 12%). This association remained significant after adjustment for age, sex, comorbidities, and CAP severity. Prior corticosteroid treatment was associated with a higher incidence of simple parapneumonic effusion and a lower incidence of empyema compared with no prior corticosteroid treatment.

Baseline pulmonary disorder did not affect the relationship between corticosteroid treatment and parapneumonic effusion.

"Pleural infection is common in patients with CAP and is associated with an increased mortality risk," said Dr. Sellares. "Our results show that previous treatment of respiratory disorders with inhaled corticosteroids may reduce the risk of developing this dangerous complication."

The potential preventive role of inhaled corticosteroids in preventing parapneumonic effusion in patients with high risk of CAP must be clarified in future randomized studies, according to Dr. Sellares.
