Both the ?J? and the ?C? are now gone ? News Lincoln County

Friends of the Vickers family say that Jim Vickers wife Cleo has died at the age of 78, dying barely a year after her husband passed away in June of last year. Now both the ?J? and the ?C? in JC Markets are gone.

Jim Vickers and Cleo Gustafson married soon after Jim graduated from Vancouver High School in 1951. Jim always referred to Cleo as the love of his life. Together they had four children; Stephen, Teresa, Linda and Diane. Jim worked in the grocery business and excelled in his supervisory skills to where he eventually managed seven Safeway grocery stores from Vancouver/Portland to Coos Bay.

But Jim wanted his own store and with his wife Cleao bought a community grocery store in Newport and named it JC Market. They create a local chain of community markets with the JC monicker. All their now grown children moved to Newport to make it a truly family run business. Those close to Jim and Cleo said they considered Newport as part of their extended family, sponsoring Little League teams and baseball field scoreboards throughout the area. He was a big supporter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Oregon Hunters and Ducks Unlimited.

Together Cleo and Jim were very active in service groups, involved in supporting local banking and the Elks. Both Jim and Cleo were also big supporters of the Oregon Coast Aquarium. Later in life Cleo and Jim bought a winter home in Arizona where they loved to entertain friends and family, played board games and enjoyed sunny weather far from the long winter rains of the Oregon Coast.

Now, both Jim and Cleo Vickers, lovers of family, friends and commitment to community have passed into that good night, their loving spirits now forever together.
