The White House News Photographers Association has disqualified a contest-winning photograph by Washington Post photographer Tracy Woodward. The association's president says the image was digitally manipulated in violation of contest rules.
Woodward's image, "State Champion," shows two high school wrestlers in the ring at a 2012 Virginia wrestling tournament. A referee is pictured in the background. In the version that won WHNPA's 2013 "Eyes of History" Award of Excellence in the "Sports Feature/Reaction" category, the referee appears partially obscured.
In a statement released Monday night, White House News Photographers Association President Ron Sachs says, "When we became aware of the altered image, the photo was immediately disqualified in accordance with our published contest rules." Washington Post Director of Photography MaryAnne Golon told the National Press Photographers Association's?News Photographer magazine that "a Washington Post photographer entered an altered photograph to the WHNPA contest. Once Post editors saw that it had been altered from what had originally been published in the Post, we withdrew the photo from consideration. The Post's ethics policy prohibits the manipulation of photographs, and we have taken action in accordance with that policy."
Woodward and Golon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
