President Barack Obama touched on a variety of issues-- energy, jobs, technology, climate change and the middle class-- in his State of the Union address on Tuesday. Yahoo News asked voters to respond to his speech. Here's one perspective.
COMMENTARY | The big question that remains after Obama's State of the Union Address is: How? He presented some lofty ideas without a real explanation of how they can be implemented. The best idea I heard was his "Fix It First" program. It sure sounds a lot like Roosevelt's New Deal package from the 1930s. That program put people to work in the aftermath of the Great Depression. They worked for an honest wage while improving structures and parks in their communities. That type of program is long overdue here in present-day America! It's time to stop writing unemployment checks and start making jobs for those who can and who want to work. It's time to stop funding the lifestyles of people who simply don't want a job.
The biggest joke of the evening? The home refinance plan. Mr. President, when you're fixing loopholes in the tax laws, be sure to ramp up the legal jargon in that home refinance plan, too. I clicked on the Obama Home Owner's Relief link on my mortgage company's website a couple of years back and called for more information. I was told that in order to qualify for refinancing, we had to be late on at least three payments and on the verge of foreclosure. There's no assistance for those of us hanging on, paying our bills, and trying to prosper.
