How to Keep Unwanted Guests Out of Your Pool | Cox Pools ...

Pesky critters can wreak havoc on what would otherwise be a wonderful, relaxing day in your pool. These ?unwanted guests? (and no, I?m talking about your Aunt Ida and her six kids) are by most standards things that definitely do not belong in your pool. Seeing a snake or a spider in the pool would make me swim faster than Michael Phelps at the Olympic trials.

?
To our dismay, sometimes these creatures can unintentionally wander into our pool area. Especially in Florida, it is common to find a snake in the pool or worse?in the skimmer basket! While snakes usually prefer darker and more swampy areas, hot and dry temperatures can lead a snake right into your beautiful, blue pool.

?
Snakes
Snakes, especially water snakes, are seeking just that?water. With seasonal droughts, it is common for species of snakes such as the water moccasin to travel in search of a water source and see your pool as the perfect oasis. Other species of snakes can sometimes fall in your pool by accident and without a ramp or other easy way to slither out, get stuck.
If you want to prevent snakes from coming into your pool area, there are several natural remedies available to keep them slithering away in the other direction:

?
Granular Sulfur?spread around the outside perimeter of the pool deck or in the edging of planter beds. You can find this at your local home improvement or hardware store. Once the snake runs his belly over the granules it gives them a belly rash, not to mention they are also very turned off by the odor.
Garlic?crush up 4-10 cloves of garlic and mix with water in a spray bottle. Spray this around the border of your pool and deck area about once a week. If snakes reach the border of this line, they should turn around because they hate the smell!

?
Bugs
Bugs can be more of a nuisance than anything else that may drift into your pool. There you are, floating aimlessly through your pool trying to relax?and getting a tiny bug bite might be the most annoying thing! Tiny little bugs in your pool can create an unpleasant surface and also corrupt the balance of your pool?s chemicals. Looking for a way to get rid of the bugs and create a clear pool surface? Try Natural Chemistry?s Clean and Perfect. It ?polishes? dull water by removing small particles that the filter cannot capture.

Make sure when it comes to your pool, you look before you leap!
